Badminton
Badminton is a most accessible, diverse, and inclusive sport which involves cross gender equality and social bonding in the community. Apart from that, the sport “Badminton” has lots of health benefits such as improvement of muscle strength, heart functioning improvement, increases lung capacity, stress reduction, bone strengthen, increases flexibility, boosts the metabolism rate, helps to increase reflex action, helps to being social and many more.
Through an unrelenting focus on equality, diversity, inclusion, and health benefits of its members, Nepal New Zealand Friendship Society (NNZFSC) started badminton sessions in early 2016/2017 summer. A handful of people were involved during its commencement days. Since, the sport was highly motivating and agile, the numbers of players were increased and NNZFSC unified badminton as a part of their integrated activities in combination with Nepali class and women’s dance class in 2018, focusing on the overall health and well-being of its members. Nevertheless, the journey has never stopped, and the craze of badminton has bloomed out in our Nepalese community and reached in the competitive format.
In 2019, NNZFSC started an annual badminton tournament for all the general members introducing two groups depending upon the skill level; Sagarmatha and Aoraki divisions, then extended to Annapurna division for beginners in 2021. This format led to the establishment of Canterbury Auckland Nepalese Badminton Annual Tournament (CANBAT). CANBAT has been started as a running competition between the regular badminton players within Nepalese communities in Auckland and Canterbury in 2021. The location of the tournament rotates between Canterbury and Auckland every year.
In addition, NNZFSC badminton team has played some friendly tournaments with some local clubs. Also, NNZFSC has been running two regular sessions on Sunday morning and Thursday evening to encourage all the community members. The number of participations in badminton has increased and regular players number reached up to 38 – 40 now, where women players are also in significant numbers. Considering the interest of members, NNZFSC has also started a training session for beginner players, especially for women and kids above 10 years. Moreover, NNZFSC has been facilitating to badminton team in every segment and encouraging more women and youth participation. This has led us to form a strong bonding in Nepalese community intensifying diversity, inclusion, and equality.
